Cancer cell culture is an important element in many cancer research approaches. As I have been assigned by Professor Hany Ariffin to learn more about cancer cell culture, I decide to write a series of articles about this topic. The main objective for this cancer cell culture series is to explain easy-to-follow methods so that my readers can really get benefits from it.
Cancer Cell Culture Series
Basically, I will try to cover as much as topics I can in this cancer cell culture series. Luckily, I have found a good reference book for this tough technique. The book is entitled as “Cancer Cell Culture” by Simon P. Langdon. Therefore, most of the topics that I will cover here are referred to this book. Honestly, this is really a good book for us as a beginner. Try to get one for your own so that we can really understand the concept.
Basic concept of cancer cell culture is essential for us as a beginner. Therefore, I will start off with this topic first. In my opinion, we need to build up a strong knowledge base about the basic concept before we can move on to the next. So, I will try to write more articles on the basic concept.
Secondly, we will explore about the techniques of utilizing the cell culture facilities to accomplish the goal of our cancer research. There are many facilities have been used for cancer cell culture. Thus, it is essential for us to know the important features for each facility so that we can fully utilize it.
Next, we will move on to know the characterization of cancer cell line. We need to know the methods to characterize and authenticate the cell lines. If you followed this blog regularly, you will know that my final year project was about MCF-7 which is breast cancer cell line and HEP-G2 which is liver cancer cell line. Both cancer cell lines have different characteristics. Yet, there are more and more types of cancer cell lines for us to explore.
After we understand those topics above, we can start to try out the methods to culture the cancer cells. I think this is the most important part for us as researchers. I will try to summarize the protocol written in the “Cancer Cell Culture” book so that we can easily understand and practice the method.
In conclusion, I hope that this cancer cell culture series is something like a training module for you and me. We learn together and discuss together. Please kindly leave your comment for every topic I have written. Thanks for reading Cytogenetics Cancer Research blog!
