Genetics: From Genes to Genomes is a slicing-edge, introductory genetics text authored by an unparalleled writer team, which includes Nobel Prize winner, Leland Hartwell. The 4th version continues to build on the integration of Mendelian and molecular concepts, providing students with the hyperlinks in between the early knowing of genetics and the new molecular discoveries that have changed the way the area of genetics is seen.

Good text, but needs updating, October 25, 2011

This review is from: Genetics: From Genes to Genomes (Hartwell, Genetics) (Hardcover)

The text itself, as the other reviews state, is quite comprehensive. It presents the material in an understandable way (though does skimp a little on some of the details by simply placing a LOT of information into a single figure). However, the main problem with this book is that the answer section is completely off in some cases. For example, there must have been an extra question introduced into the Chapter 9 problems section, since all the answers are off. It is a big hassle to go back and find which questions have which answers. Now I have to buy the SSM and hope and pray that the answers are updated there too (and I think there was a big problem with that recently actually).

Overall, not a bad product. Go into this expecting to either be spot on with your answers to problems or to have to buy the SSM though.

For those looking for a broad yet deep introduction to genetics in a single book, “Genetics: From Genes To Genomes” delivers on both accounts. Hartwell, Hood et. al. are well known authorities in the field, and you’ll be hard pressed to find another textbook at this level of content value in the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately, good things seldom come cheap–as you’ve undoubtedly noticed by the three digits to the left of the decimal point–but short of actually enrolling in molecular biology curriculum, you’ll be well served by this book, and I wholly recommend it.

This a rich and comprehensive text which takes the reader from the basics and quickly moves into the meat of molecular genetics. It finishes in more advanced areas for the beginner in the field. An excellent introductory text in the science.
